Rosemary Kennedy (1918 -2005)- sister of former US  president John Kennedy - was administered a lobotomy by the recommendation of doctors and the approval of father Joseph R Kennedy at the age of 23‘ The family's reasoning was, that she was "acting erratic" and was overall "difﬁcult and irritable".  As the procedure started, Rosemary was told to recite the “Lord's Prayer" and sing "God Bless America'l Only, when she became incoherent, did they stop. The lobotomy had failed, as Rosemary now could not live an independent life, and was institutionalized right after the surgery‘  Rosemary's mother Rose Kennedy did not visit her for 20 years‘ Her father Jospeh never visited her.  Her condition was described as "mental redartation" by her family, when they had to explain her sudden disappearance. Rosemary's true condition, caused by a failed lobotomy, didn't become public knowledge until 1987‘

To me this story is not just oddly terrifying, but extremely so. But it needs to be remembered. Unnecessary lobotomies were bad, no matter who it was done to, but this is probably the most known one.
