Is it one of those mental disorders, like in Yakuza? Where the woman was temporarily blind due to stress or something?

There's actually a form of blindness caused by a damage in the hind brain where the concious vision is processed. The person "sees" perfectly and the brain processes everything, recognizes objects and patterns. It's a strange fringe case, but that kind of blindness can actually be "cured" if the brain restructures itself due to Alzheimer's damage.

There is a blindness that is caused by idle part of your brain. Your eyes function well but your brain refuse to process. The most common example of this are cortical color blindness. When your damaged brain get recovered, sometimes its not directly function because you are used to being blind. It refuse to function evetho the damaged part is healed. Some mental theraphy is needed.

If you forget not having a girlfriend can work as you start again without any baggage to slow you down. It's just a matter of approach and behavior. But regaining sight seems weird to say the lest. I don't know what that disease really does to your brain, but if it's literally killing your brain cells, it may that in some situations, some aspects can be redirected or repurposed. In a way similar to accidents with head injuries that made people know out of a blue to play an instrument or paint really good. Weird stuff has happened. The brain is a cool mystery.
