Many high school students have won wrestling competitions the same way (maybe not on the state level, but definitely the local and regional ones).

Reminds me of a Highland games where they had cash prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. In one event, they only had two people, so they asked the crowd if anyone wanted to participate. One guy got up, went up to a boulder he was supposed to lift, "tried", and got third place and a couple hundred bucks.

Same thing has happened a bunch of times in Denmark. The rules states clearly that a category with less than 3 has to be mixed with a similar category, but as this is apparently confusing to work out, they let 1 person compete and automatically win gold.
