You have to push a button with both of your hands at the same time at the right and left side of the machine, to make it work. Quite save, but that doesn't mean that some people still won't find a way to hurt themselves by accident, using that machine.

Yeah, right, my father work in same factory like these, work too long you can feel the machine when it faulty, some other dont, and when it does, it came down and you lose either your finger, or your hand.

Unlike steel/metal shears which cut in a straight downward motion through the piece, paper's interwoven fiber structure (see foto) would actually bind up if that action were used, and stop the blade. Paper fibers are cut using the crossing motion so the individual fibers are sheared as the blade advances.
