According to "Man-Eaters of Kumaon" by Jim Corbett, a major reason big cats become man eater is due to losing vital capability while trying to catch porcupines.

They do catch porcupines and eat them often. The lions avoid them. It is their food. If it wasn't there would be 10 000 porcupines running around. Thing is that they need to get to their belly.

those quills are even more viscous then you think. they are barbed. when they get embedded in an animal they naturally dig deeper and deeper.

Love how the spiky thing never tries to run away or even just saunter off - it stays out in the open taunting the poor hungry cat
