Well written and interesting characters are fun to watch full stop. If your character is gay or racially diverse thats fine, but over focusing on it or shoehorning them in (or even swapping out an already established character) for the sake of diversity is just compensating for lazy writing. For example, everyone likes captain Holt from Brooklyn 99, because hes an excellent character whos well thought out. He happens to be black and gay and those definitely contribute to who he is and the way he interacts with others, but writers dont make that his entire personality or reason for being in the show.

You know what really grind my gears. I just watched midsummer murders S1E4. Its the murder of an art restorator and her cousin the actor and accountant. The young lad, who played mozart in the theater were the cousin got killed, lived with this gay couple who owned a bookstore. This gay couple had more character and character developement in this 45min than all the LGBTQ+ characters in all our modern shows combined. We could depict gay couples better in 4:3 format and 720p than in todays 16:9 HD.
