This makes me think of army logic. We had to do a course on helping the enviroment: close windows to preserve heat, dont litter, use email rather than paper to save paper.
Everyone had to complete it and then keep a record.... by printing off the certificate for your personal file.
In other words thousands of people had to print paper certificates for a course on saving paper.

Many years ago, when there wasn't computers to analyse spectra/chromatograms in chemistry and you wanted to calculate the areas under a curve... you'd cut the areas and weigh them to get a figure.
Say if area A was 2,5 g and area B 5 g, you'd know there was a factor 2 in the signal between the two areas.
