Why would you need WiFi in a grill? You download the meat from the internet?

Its for remote monitoring and adjustment of temperatures. App updates are likely for security.. still seems unnecessary to me.

Probably update was pushed some time ago, and you just hadn't used BBQ in some time.

Pellet smokers take hours to cook. The wifi monitors the internal temperature of the meat. A push notification hits your phone when the meat is ready. Seems lazy, but when smoking a brisket for 8-12hrs, it's nice not to have to check it every hr. Plus, it notifies you when your pellets are low or you lose the flame. Helps those who can't cook, cook.

Same thing happened to me when I bought an Xbox one. I wanted to play Halo when I got home from work but it turned out the Xbox had its own plans. 7 hour software update. Never played a game on Xbox after that.
