In 1990, Musk entered Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. Two years later, he transferred to the University of Pennsylvania; he graduated in 1997 with a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in economics from the Wharton School and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in physics.
I disagree that you need a degree to be succesfull and I also agree that you could not be succesful if you have one. But that does not mean that degrees are not helpful and Elon Musk has some degrees.

To be fair - having a father who owns a gem mine gives some leeway as well.

It’s always these billionaires who say stuff like this. They belong to the less than 0.0001%. Don’t take advice from celebrities or billionaires about regular life imo. A good degree from a good school will provide you significant advantages. You’ll always have a backup in case all else fails.

Some people make it without education. A very small minority. If you can, get a good education. It will help.

Saying degrees help you to be successful is like saying dogs are taller than cats. It’s true but there will be some smart-ass who finds you a tall cat and a short dog to show cats can be taller and he will be technically correct.
Yet they are misleading as the original statement is generally true.

Also having rich parents helps a bit.
