I just read about Salem - Basically if someone hated a girl for not wanting to fuck, or another girl is jealous they can claim someone to be a witch and she'd be tortured and exuted if they admit. So just like today's 'internet shaming' if you don't comply with the mob: They besmirch your name, block you out of social media, banks don't wanna work with you...

Make it to the 12th century, when my people were enslaved until the 19th century, and then blacks lament that they were slaves. We came out of it white and have an identity and do not make it a sanctity of our crimes to bolly white slaves. Do I have to talk about how my great-grandfather sold alcohol to buy himself free? I bark under the wrong tree, but I had to mention it.
Alot of the tales are absolutely not historical or are just isolated cases but it's not like anyone cares about actual facts, just the version that is closer to what they want it to be
