Alot of historians during the time of events didn't sugar coat them as much as you would think. the Roman's tried to hide the devastation of Cannae but it was still heavily documented by Roman sources. Qunitus Fabius Pictor was the historian who most probably told Titus Livius of the battle and much of the punic wars. And livy went on to recount them in "From the founding of the city".
