Caffeine works by blocking adenosine receptors, but that doesn't mean adenosine isn't produced. Half-life of caffeina in your system is up to around six hours, during/after which all the built up adenosine will rush into the receptors making you more tired than you would normally be, the so called caffeina crash, to stop that you would need to drink more coffee. More than that, if you drink coffee less than those 6 hours before sleep, it can affect your sleep quality, such as even though you're sleeping, you're not really resting, so you're waking up more tired thus creating the need for more coffee. That's how you get hooked. You should try different ways of waking yourself up and staying energized, like proper hydration with warm wather, occasional exercise, stretching, etc.
