Wait until you do basic math in Excel at your job. And if you think that you are beyond retarded, look at other people's messy Excel sheets.

Dude I don't know if it was discipline or just being used to constant study and examination, but after taking a break from school and trying to go back for my masters, it's like I've forgotten everything.

I'm currently studying physics as an undergraduate student first year. Previously, I have obtained two doctorates (one pending, more accurately) in unrelated subjects, and can easily produce today one new research paper per month so I am quite familiar with science in general (not physics). Yesterday I spent two hours ( 2 ) trying to calculate by hand the Euler-Lagrange of a projectile in parabolic motion, and I got stuck multiple times and eventually had to give up and look up the solution. I have seen the 18 year old students who attend the same course as me solving these problems within minutes, and cannot figure out what is wrong with me (safe from Alzheimer maybe) and how to get better. Any advice for an older student who would like to learn more but has trouble with the basis of the discipline would be greatly appreciated. Susskind's lectures on the Theoretical Minimum help, but he goes too fast and glosses over many details so I get lost frequently.

I understand referencing calculus as "big brained", but here in the US, I'm pretty sure they don't teach calculus in high school. Asians probably learn it in kindergarten. And the worst thing is that you need trigonometry for calculus. Look at the writing on The One Ring. It looks like several function calls that include pi. Trigonometry is written in the dark tongue of Mordor.

Its a common enough scenario and works both ways. For me UG engineering and masters later were piece of cakes while I struggled big time in school. What you going through is just your brain readjusting to efforts requiring more focused application.
